Fractionated Laser Therapy (FRAXEL)

Fractionated Laser therapy is used to treat wrinkles, scarring including acne scarring, stretch marks, and to rebuild collagen in the skin. Most areas of the body can be treated including face, chest, arms and hands. Usually a course of 4 to 6 treatments is required, depending upon the strength of the laser, the depth of treatment and the degree of the problem.

What is Fractionated Laser?

Many people are confused as to what fractionated laser therapy is and think all machines are the same. Fractionated laser is a delivery system not a type of laser. It means a fraction of the skin is treated at any one time (treating the skin in dots) leaving the rest of the skin intact. This delivery system was developed to try and reduce the complications caused by lasers treating 100% of the skin at any one time. With fractionated lasers you can get different strengths of lasers using the fractionated delivery system. It is thus different fractionated lasers will treat different conditions, have differing amounts of downtime and side effects At Jeune we use the Palomar Lux 1540 Fractional Non Ablative Laser. This is a medium depth laser and treats the skin with small dots or micro beams which keeps the skin intact and reduces side effects and healing time. Historically, the whole skin was treated at once, causing many side effects, lots of time off work and often fear that we will never look normal again. Also, treatment was only for the face but not the body. As a medium depth erbium laser our machine is great for fine lines (not wrinkles) skin texture, stretch marks, scars and acne scars. The skin will be red and swollen for 24 to 48 hours, but not raw, so healing can progress quickly.  Other ablative fractionated lasers penetrate deeper, giving dramatic results, but more side effects, including leaving the skin red and raw, which can lead to infection and embarrassment about being seen in public.

How does it work?

The laser penetrates the skin in micro beams (small channels) destroying the tissue in these channels. In regards to scarring and acne scarring the aim is that the body will replace the damaged scar tissue with new healthy tissue thus reducing the appearance of the scar. In skin rejuvenation we aim to set up a healing response in the skin, which will then produce extra elastin and collagen. Plumping and thickening the skin giving it a more youthful and fresh appearance.

Is the treatment painful?

The treatment is uncomfortable but not painful. A specialised numbing cream is applied to the area for at least 20 minutes prior to treatment. After the treatment the face is red, swollen, warm and tight for a few hours. Ice and soothing gels such as aloe can be applied.

Will I need time off work?

After treating the face the skin will be swollen and red for up to 48 hours, so returning to work immediately is not recommended. The skin can stay pinkish or slightly bronzed for up to a week, but this can be covered with makeup. Returning to work on Monday after a Friday night treatment is usually fine. Immediate return to work is possible if the treatment area can be covered with clothing. If you have a light fractionated treatment the skin is usually only red and swollen for the rest of the day. This treatment is only good for skin texture not for scaring or stretch marks.

How often do I need treatments?

Treatments are performed every 6 to 8 weeks but can be spread out further.

When will I notice results?

Immediate changes are due to facial swelling. It can take up to 8 weeks to  start showing results and improvements continue for up to six months after treatment has finished.

What aftercare is recommended?

We recommend only a gentle cleansing and aloe gel or post treatment balm for 2 days post treatment. For a week or two after treatment you are advised to use only gentle cleansers and moisturisers and stop glycolic or vitamin A products if you normally use these. It is best to keep the area out of the sun whilst healing and wear a 30 plus sunscreen is the face is treated. Please not if you have Asian or olive skins you must be on specialised skincare for 4 weeks prior to your treatment due to the risk of pigmentation forming whilst the skin is healing
